Watching Demolition Man (1993) for the first time today. Today, November 20, would be the 24th anniversary of Sylvester Stallone’s character going into cryo.
-
This movie is the fucking Who’s Who of the early 90s. If you super don’t care about my movie-going experience, recommend you mute this thread. I have no idea how chatty it’s gonna make me.
-
I already know about the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut edits. Looking forward to that.
-
Wow I sure do hate the cops already. And the laws they’re enforcing.
-
Is this where the phrase “MurderDeathKill” comes from? I always just assumed that was a Norwegian metal band.
-
Tech-wise I’m a little impressed already. Self-driving cars that still have steering wheels, video calls on iPad-like devices…
-
I would be so fucked if the word fuck was banned.
-
This movie is prepared for post-pandemic life. No one shakes hands anymore, and that Jedi guy is walking around talking to telepresence robots. And Otto from Beetlejuice is wearing gloves.
-
OH MY GOD IS THIS THE ACTUAL ORIGIN OF “ENHANCE YOUR CALM”‽‽‽ I use that phrase all the time!
-
Kindergartner to reporter: “fuck you, lady!” LAPD cop who I’m pretty sure is gonna be the protagonist: “heh good answer”
-
I’ve only just seen the Terminator movies for the first time in the past few months and am coming to the conclusion that naked muscle men in the fetal position were just a thing didn’t notice in the 90s my first time around.
-
THEY OUTLAWED SPICY FOOD THIS WILL NOT DO
-
“We are not used to physical contact.” “Germs!”
-
Some of the editing for these action sequences is just delightfully comical. Also I’m p sure Sterling Archer is channeling this Phoenix guy like half the time.
-
What happened to Denis Leary.? We got like four lines and he vanished. I’m looking forward to that B-plot.
-
Sly’s right, this utopia is some fascist shit. LOVING Sandra Bullock’s character’s poor execution of 90s idioms.
-
OMG I JUST GOT TO THE PIZZA HUT DUBS
-
Mark down another interesting prediction! “President Schwarzenegger” is impressively close to “Governor Schwarzenegger”. Also they didn’t manage to replace the Taco Bell logos on the exterior glass
-
my roommate apparently still isn’t entirely used to living in California bc he said “the big *what*” when Bullock referred to “The Big One” hitting in 2010.
-
You all laugh about the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut valet but I’m telling you, I used to live in Beverly Hills and it is *entirely* believable to me even without the fascist utopia franchise war.
-
They also got the voice assistant/Siri/Alexa/Google whatever thing
-
THEY BANNED SEX ARE YOU KIDDING ME
-
oh my god he’s knitting oh my god oh my god why didn’t someone tell me SLY IS KNITTING!
-
and we’ve got another one: turn-by-turn GPS directions!
-
movie: “carne de rata” “this burger is rat‽” roommate: “eeeeeew! he finished the whole thing” me: “yeah this is how i feel like all the time.”
-
> I’ve SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiener". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Denis Leary isn’t _that_ far off.
-
the cop cars kinda remind me of Desiigner’s BMW Panda.
-
oops, looks like the fascist who dresses like a jedi forgot to program Phoenix’s little army not to hurt him
-
did he just knock her out? whoa, that’s like… *really* bad for you. also apparently Dahmer didn’t die in prison, but rather got frozen. Phoenix is gonna be disappointed when he discovers he’s proooooobably not murder-army material.
-
mama had a baby and its head popped off?
-
i feel like i followed this movie super well until the very end. i do not understand what the tool/weapon was that froze everything. Sly keeps talking like he’s going somewhere. Cryo is done and you can’t go back to 1996, man. It’s your world too now.
-
Okay that was a super fun movie and I’m so glad I… 1. watched it 2. waited until my 30s to watch it bc (i probably would have been too stuck up to fully enjoy an action movie like this) 3. live tweeted it. y’all are so positive ^_^
-
Oh also, I think maybe it holds up pretty well. Sure there’s a little early-90s cringe, but if there were any transphobic or homophobic jokes, they all landed in moments I wasn’t paying attention.
